Metal Detecting Gods feel sorry for old Wyatt
Well.......It was brutally cold this morning, and the place I'd been excited about going to...well, I came to find out that it has been re-landscaped and the first thing I found was a clad quarter....obviously in the ground for a long time....at about 6 inches. Not far from that...a clad dime and a nickel, similarly deep. I spent about an hour there....no old stuff.
Got happy feet and had to look for greener grass....so into the older part of Carmichaels....to a fantastic old yellow brick Victorian that was built by a doctor in the 1890s....who never lost much. I did manage a pair of old (and really pitiful looking) wheats...a 1914...and then a 1910. No silver....need another spot.
I remembered my dentist's office...and the fact that I'd been given permission to detect there. It was a block from where I was....so off I went. I was there for about 15 seconds....the very first hit was the 44 quarter in the scan. It was at about 5 inches...maybe 5 1/2". I styed there for another hour or so....picked up some 50's wheaties....and decided to head home for a sandwich. I got home at 1:30 pm....with not much to show for my effort....the 44 quarter was the lifesaver. I cleaned up the clad and threw it in the can.
Had a bologna sandwich and decided to head to the bottom of the hill...no, I would not let myself go back to the old school. I have been eyeing a yard up the hill from there....pretty ordinary looking home....with an old, worn yard. Got permission from the lady to detect, and was there a total of 2 hours. I got a silver rosie first....not bad...about 4 inches down. Perhaps 20 minutes into the hunt I got an incredibly solid "half dollar" hit....and I'm starting to be less skeptical of those these days....and I shifted into archeologist mode and gave this one wide berth....no fair scratching it if it does turn out to ba a half. It was this 42 walking liberty half...not more than 2 inches down......and I'm pleased to say there are no scratches on it. It's amazing how white those things look against the topsoil. I'll never get used to that.
Worked around that yard some more.....dug a few wheats...found a couple clad dimes....and a cootie leg (remember the gme "Cootie") in a hole with a wheatie. Then I got a "quarter" hit......and scored a silver rosie...then another....and the signal was still there....the 42 merc was the last to come out of that hole.
I guess it doesn't pay me to drive to a neighboring town.....my own little community seems to do me much better.
My back hurts a little....but I'm still all smiles. The MDing Gods had pity on me today....and for that I am grateful. I'll post a second picture of the silver once its cleaned up. I wanted to show before and after shots this time.
