Default A token from the area.

Went to a friends house in town day before yesterday. I have been wanting to hunt his house for some time now, and this was the day. I found the normal amount of clad, and a few wheaties. Did find a pretty nice 1918 Merc in good shape. I was getting close to going home time when I got a good strong 50 cent reading that said 8 inches. I finally was able to locate the target and was a little dissapointed that it wasn't silver. However, it turned out to be a trade token from our town dated 1949. This is my oldes token so far. About one more good hunt left before I have to hang it up for the season.

I like those tokens, they usually have a lot of history connected with them. Yours is a nice one.

Thanks Bob. I have a question for you. What program are you running on your machine? You really do find some awesome stuff, and I was wondering just how you had your DFX set up. If ya don't mind that is.

Congrats on your find Bill! That is a very nice token!

Boobie I am wondering the same thing as Bill, are you using the DSMP and if so are you using those exact settings or are you having to change a few settings with it! How deep are most of your older coin finds!

Thanks for any information you can help me with!

Hi Bill!

Congrats on your find! Trade tokens are excellent: They are usually many orders of magnitude rarer than any coins you'll ever find.
I was blessed to find a copper 5 cent token from the Penland (NC) store on a path to a mine.
It looked like a corroded penny, but turned out to be a trade token. The locals say they are extremely rare, and date from about 1916-1918.
I can only imagine some miner losing it, and bemoaning the loss of 5 cents, which could buy him a dope (NC talk for a Coke or Pepsi), or any number of other things.
Question on the depth reading you got: Do you figure that you got an honest 8" under the coil, or was the actual recovery a bit more shallow?
My DFX gives me readings, but the usually are an inch or two closer to the surface than the detector indicates.
The only thing I can think of is that the grass adds a couple of inches due to height above ground, and that the calibration may be off a bit.
I've never found a coin more than an actual 5 or 6 inches under the actual soil.
Comments, anyone?

HH! -Tom

Tom, I use a coin probe that I made from brass thats about ten inches long in the shank. When I am doing someones yard, I use this probe all the time so I really can pinpoint the exact location and depth of my target.. That way I'm not doing as much damage to the grass. I kept pushing the probe down till I felt the metallic tick I get when I hit a coin.(I do this VERY gently as to not damage the coin) Anyway, I only had about 2 1/2" of the shaft left when I hit the target. The ground conditions were nice black topsoil that was quite moist. I also agree with you that the depth readings will vary due to the type of soil conditions that are present at the time. I have gotten a deep reading, only to find the target is just an inch or two below the surface. Thats the main reason I like to use the probe. Might just save me from digging to China.

Default Token Collectors

Some people prefer to collect Tokens! Many reflect the local history of your town. Tokens are a by-gone era basicly they were the paper coupons of yesterday. Also tokens can cover a very wide area of interest, from The Civil War, to Mercantile-Trade type, to Transportation, for Taxes, etc. Many collectors will specialize in a particular type such as the Civil War or all the Bus tokens, for example! HOPE YOU FIND MORE! GOOD LUCK JOE
