Default 2 months of silver finds from Greensboro Pa

I had to do a lot of research back through my posts, and listing and looking at coins with my loupe in order to put this picture together, but I wanted a shot of every piece of silver that I have dug here in our little town since Sept 30th (not Oct 1st as I'd said previously).....so this is 2 months and one day's worth of silver digs. It sure has been fun.

I weighed it on our digital postage scales...and it's 11.7 oz...that's not troy ounces mind you, but real ounces. There are only 14 troy ounces to a pound I think....so it's a different measure altogether....but my scale doesn't do troy ounces.

I thought maybe some of you would like to see it all in one place. This year I went for quantity....next year...quality. I am working on locating some older sites.

Wyatt

Hey Boobie.....You'd better hurry.....I'm tryin' to not leave much.

Greg, I am looking forward to our next outing too. I'll line us up a place and we'll go to one I haven't hit first, and maybe you'll be able to bag a little more silver. I was driving through Smithfield....man, there's so much silver up there in those yards, that you can practically smell it. We should go knockin' on some doors up your way.

Rip.......Good luck. I hope you find a bunch of good stuff today. Don't forget to show us the pictures.

Wyatt

Default yo W. Earp

From the land of the Bluenose...that is one halibut of a lot of silver.

Know what you mean..sometimes one hunts for quanitity, other times for quality and still others for dinkies.

You are having a great year...keep it up!

Hi Wyatt!

EXCELLENT finds! You've done very well! Hope you continue your hot streak when the weather gets better.
A pound is a pound, but there are only twelve Troy ounces to a pound instead of the standard 16 ounces, so the Troy ounce is about a third larger than the standard ounce. I'll pull my books after work and give it to you in Grams for comparison....

Cool Tom........I appreciate that. I wondered after I'd posted if it was 14...or maybe it *was* 12 troy ounces to the pound....I knew it wasn't 16. The grams conversion would be helpful also.

Call the USPS (post office) and ask them how many ounces are in their pound

I think that anybody who wants to find silver can do so. All you need is yards that haven't been searched....and that means shortening your sights a little, looking in the yards of 50's bungalows....and disregarding the obvious places. Though I did get exceptionally lucky with the old school....in reality, that's not going to happen often these days. There were several of these yards that coughed up 6 or more silver coins. My rule is....if I don't hit on at least wheats old enough to indicate silver in an hour....time for a new spot. Did I leave some stuff behind...perhaps...but I'll bet not much.

I think that these yards produced well because this was a small town, very compacted population-wise....and that all of these back yards were fair game for the kids as they made their way to and from school, to the theatre, to the mom and pop stores, to the ferry to New Geneva. In the old days, before attorneys and lawsuits governed the world....kids went wherever they wanted to...and it was kids who did the losing for the most part.

Some of these finds (including 2 of the walkers) were old clothesline finds. In one case the old clothesline wasn't there anymore, but I've no other explanation for 7 silver coins all in a strip roughly 10 feet wide...by 30 feet in length. It was a large yard, and I found just one stray silver dime in the back....the rest was from where I imagine the old clothesline to have been.

Next year.......older coins....and probably fewer coins. I had a hail and hardy 2 months this fall though, and it was a great way to come back to this old hobby. I was out for about an hour today...a clad dime and a penny, and some really cold hands is all I got.

I'm going to have to travel to the courthouse to do some research....and that's going to be a new experience for me. I might end up turning up some great finds though, if I can just find a couple places I'm looking for. Turns out one place might not even be in the town I was researching when I found reference to it. Thanks Greg....the info that you sent tipped me off to that possibility (probability).

Wyatt
