Default 3 Indian Head pennies

I went detecting yesterday to an old cemetery in the middle of the city. The cemetery was established in 1850. I only detected the fringe areas and the grassy roadways. I pulled out 3 Indian Heads in 20 minutes on one of the roadways. They were only 2 inches deep and read a perfect 50-52 V.D.I. number. I believe that there may be many more old coins on the roadways and fringes in the cemetery. I now have 18 Indian Heads this year!

IH penny are one of my favorit coins. I know one summer I would have killed to find a IH (Gary House will back me on this) For month I walked around telling my wife and co-workers why can't I find a IH. For several more weeks I muttered around saying why why why. Then one day crosing a section in the old cotton field I alwasy hunt. I got the old hit on the XLT saying 50-55 on the VDI. I thought trash then when I dug up my first IH I thought I would fall over. After this find I would go on to find 13 in this one section of field about a 10x10 area. Now for some reason I'm stuck on Bullets. All I want is a dropped 3 ringer. I have my sites set maybe, maybe the 3 ringers will pop out of the ground like the IH's did to me last summer.Lets hope.

Great find good luck see you in the field

Later Will

Thanks, guys. Has anyone else detected the fringe areas in a cemetery before? They usually produce some good coins because of the people taking their keys out of their pockets. Or, someone may sit there to rest during a hot summer day back in the early 1900's. I totally respect the dead and will no way desecrate the property.

I work for a VERY OLD cemetery.
These are my thoughts on that.

Go to the manager or the board of directors and ask them for written permission to detect. Give them your full name and address and phone number, so they can get in touch with you when they need your services. Demonstrate to them just how neat and unobtrusive you will do your hobby.

Also tell them that you will leave the area when there are visitors in the area that don't truly understand your mission.

Let them know that you are willing to turn over to them any religious finds and or artifacts of a historical value. So they could have a presentation case made for the visitors to view.

Most facilities would appreciate this, as it allows others to see the history of the site.

Another thing is that quite often there will be those that have lost personal objects while visiting loved ones that they would truly like to have back in their possession.

If it is a real old cemetery they usually do not have the locations of long lost markers that would identify who is resting in that plot. When and if you locate such markers it helps the cemetery take care of that particular plot and keep it in better condition.

Due to all the previous years, and the cutting of the grass does seem to hide many old markers.

The manager then will have this information when and if someone is searching for the unknown site of a distant relative.

It is a wonderful feeling when you can help someone find such a site so they can then talk to and pray to their long lost relatives or friends.

As you said the most important thing is to RESPECT the deceased and approach this task with reverence and humility.

As for myself I have unearthed many C.W. markers that now are no longer hidden by the passing years. Right now I am plotting out and mapping out over 1000 sites. Many of which are from the Spanish American War, the C.W. and our two World Wars, that thus far are lost due to mother nature and the passing years. I am working with the local C.W. historical people to locate these plots.

It may take years to complete this task but when it is done I will feel like I have contributed something back to my community.

I hope I haven't offended anyone with this post, but I truly feel honored to be able to assist all the others involved with this project.

Do you keep the coins? Most people would think that it is immoral. What kind of coins have you found in the cemetery?
