I was at work Monday and showed my button to some coworkers who have lived here all their lives and one of them suggested that it could be
from the time when Clemson University 1st opened. At that time it was a military college but to get a land grant it has to have a agricultural curriculum so it was called Clemsen Agricultural College. It opened in 1893. I emailed the curator of exhibits and here is her response:
Yes, you did find a Clemson Agricultural College button from one of the earliest uniforms in the 1890s. The College opened in 1893 and that date appeared on the button until the early 1900s when the uniform style changed. I'm attaching 3 pictures of one of the uniforms in our collection -- you can see there were lots of those buttons on them. One photo is a close up of the label with the name of the uniform manufacturer --Oehms Acme Hall Baltimore, Maryland. I'm also attaching an 1894 photograph showing several cadets wearing the uniform. Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck with your treasure hunting.
Hope you all enjoyed the pics
Thanks for looking
