Default John Adams Letter found in a shoebox has been sold

A while back i posted a letter sent to Delaware Senator Henry Latimer by President John Adams requesting his attendance at the last session of Congress before the election results were known and dated 1802. This letter was found by my brother in law at my mother in law's house in a shoebox last summer and was passed around at a family picnic like it was the local newspaper . After a while we started getting curious and wondered what it may be worth if valid and through some research approached a lady in Philadelphia named Catherine Barnes who immediately noticed the historical significance of this letter and informed us of it's possible value and it was placed for sale on consingement with Catherine Barnes as the dealer. My wife was informed last week that it sold for $20,000 even with the mustard stains . Goes to show you never know what you may find when you least expect it. Here's the link to the site where the letter was posted. HH Bill http://www.barnesautographs.com/page...ry/adams_j.htm

Default Ahhh Haaaaa !!!

called my brother (still in bed the bum )Then it hit me ! John Jay (December 12, 1745May 17, 1829) was an American politician, statesman, revolutionary, diplomat and jurist. Considered one of the "founding fathers" of the United States, Jay served in the Continental Congress, and was elected President of that body in 1778. During and after the difficult and dangerous years of the American Revolutionary War, he was an ambassador to Spain and France, helping to fashion American foreign policy and to secure favorable peace terms from the British and French. He cowrote the Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. Jay also served on the U.S. Supreme Court as the first, as well as the youngest, Chief Justice of the United States from 1789 to 1794.

Thanks Pat and John and rip,

I would highly recommend Catherine Barnes to anyone who has any signed historical documents and is curious as to their value or historical significance.
Sounds like your brother may have something there "rip" and it never hurts to ask. We knew nothing and thought the letter may be worth a couple hundred bucks or something but Catherine Barnes is so knowlegeable she understood the historical significance which unlocked the value. Good Luck . HH Bill
