Default Geezum Crow

You know I keep reading about all the finds everyone is making and all the coins and rings they are finding on a daily basis and I am wondering what I am doing wrong. Is it my machine (BH tracker IV?) Is it my settings? Am I not searching in the correct places? (I have tried beaches, school yards, fair grounds, parks) So far I have found $.14 and 2 possible civil war buttons plus a lot of junk. You guys make it sound so easy when you post that you have found tons of stuff. Should I trade up to a different detector? Maybe one with a depth indicator on it? I just got this one and am still learning it. I am just baffled. JoAnne

Hey Joanne ! did some lookin into the bh tracker and wasent to impressed ! If you can afford a better detector this could help ! The garrett ace 250 seems to be a decent fairly inexpensive detector.I started out with bottom of the line detectors and have definatly improved on my finds by buying a top of the line model. After all it should pay for itsself in time !

I hear you RIP. I bought the bounty hunter in July and THEN found this forum after I had ordered it. I have read alot of reviews on the ACE 250 and am now wishing I had bought that one. OH well we learn from out mistakes. Maybe next year I can purchase the aCE and use the BH as a back up. Thanks for the info RIP.

Default Hang in there

JoAnne just keep trying. It will get better. When I first started if I came home with 5 pennies I thought I was doing great. As for the detector, it is not the best but it will do. My son hunts with the same one and he finds all kinds of stuff. You just have to learn what the detector is telling you and you need to hunt where there is something to find. If you can do a high school yard I would bet that you will find a bunch of coins and cheap jewelry.
Try this. Hide some coins, pull tab and junk under some cardboard and set your detector until you can find them, identify them and pinpoint them. It is good practice and much more easier than digging empty holes.
Good luck and I am looking forward to hearing about all the great finds I know you will start getting.

I don't know what the trouble may be Joanne.....but I have used nothing but white's machines since I got into this hobby in 1978. I do know that the white's models with preset notches are hard to beat as far as being user friendly is concerned. Set all of the knobs to "P" and go find stuff.

Location Location Location!!!

It can't be said enough. If you're looking in the wrong places even a $1200 detector is not going to help you a bit. Get to know your area and you'll start finding the good stuff. IF you choose to hunt the same places as everyone else swinging a detector then you'd better have a better detector and better technique.

I prefer no competition. Just the other day I found a very nice 1903 Indian head virtually on top of the ground. It was only covered with a thin layer of dirt in a washed out area on a private front yard.

Don't get discouraged JoAnne, what you see everyone posting is their cream, nobody mentions the ton of low fat they threw into the garbage when they got home. There are a lot of good tips mentioned here, location, research and lots of it, and just spending a lot of time in the field getting to know what your machine is telling you.
I detect a lot of camp sites. I get to detect and the dogs get to play in the water so it's a win win but there are a lot of days when I come home with a pouch full of old tent stakes, .22 cases. pop tops galore, rusty fish hooks, and maybe if I'm real lucky some clad where they shook out their tent. Bob
Also found a couple pocket spills where some couple had been umm "pickin wildflowers" down by the stream.

Thanks Bob - you are right - no one mentions the garbage they collected.
