Default Holy Cow...I got a real treat in the mail today!

A buddy of mine was up from Texas last month and while he was here we went coinshooting a little bit....a very little bit because we had precious little time. He really liked it. He was amazed at the frequency with which coins were lost and just how many are lying about.

I went to my mailbox this morning, figuring to pick up some more bills, and there was a yellow card in the box....which meant I had a parcel. My friend had told me that he'd sent me a "care package"....and aside from the jingling of coins in the box, I had no idea what he'd sent. The jingle sounded like pennies though.

There are 3 hardbound coin books. There's one for Barber dimes...and there are 4 dimes in the book, one really slick 1902 barber a 16-s mercury dime (I'll have to make sure it's not a D) and 2 silver rosies.

The next book I opened was one for V nickels....and there are 2, again a 1902 very slick....and an 1891 in VF. There were also a few buffalos.

The 3rd book is "Barber Quarters".....nope, no Barbers in it.....just 22 silver washington quarters.

there was a book of wheat pennies....the second book, mostly full, and swimming in the carton were 2 broken rolls of wheaties.

I stopped at my mother's house this morning and picked up one of my old fruit jars, a great Iron cross 1858 Mason's patent complete with rubber seal and zinc lid. That's going to be the container for my silver. If I ever decide to bury it (yeah right) it'll be ready to give whoever digs it up a heart attack.

I'll add some pictures later. It's the wife's birthday and we're getting company. Her Dad's bringin' the cake.

I can't believe it....just can't believe it. To top things off...I didn't get any bills today either.

Wyatt

Still don't know that I deserve it. I gave him a Gibson mandolin that needed mucho repairs when he was up here, but I was glad to be rid of it. I don't have to fix that instrument now...and he already did.

There's definitely no way to measure the value of a little good will though.

Oh....The nickel book is cool.....it's shield nickels, V nickels, and buffalo nickels all in one volume! They're the old whitman books....but green ones, not the blue ones like they still sell.

I told Vickii that I did so well on her birthday that we'll just celebrate it again tomorrow.

Well bless your heart, Greg. I appreciate that. Thanks.

You gotta see this fruit jar. I neglected to say in my earlier post....it's not a quart jar, it's a pint. They're much scarcer than the 1 quart ones....and take about half as long to fill with silver coins too!

It's also neat because when they made it, they laid it on its side when it was still too hot, so it has a flat spot on it...and is slightly granular in that area. It was one of my prize jars. One of these days my Mom will probably want me to take all of them, and most are the quart size. I have a keystone embossed one there too.

Pictures later.

Wyatt

One of these days I'll get those jars. They're sitting on a gallery around the top of my Mom's kitchen cupboards. They look kind of cool there. There's one wax sealer and probably 7 or 8 of the other early hand finished quart sized numbers. There may even be a 1/2 gallon keystone date jar. I think that one's still up there. I was really after the pint one this morning, because I can actually fill that one faster.

As soon as I get the last 4 silver coins I bought with clad.....I'm going to put all of my silver in this jar. It'll be better than half full.

I probably won't try to fill the barber dime and quarter books.....pretty danged spendiferous...both of those series'......especially the dimes. I will probably put my nickels in the book though....not dug ones. Those are just too nasty.

That is kind of my motto. That and all things happen for a reason - There are no coincidences in life. Hope everyone has a great day and good luck finding those treasures. JoAnne

Nice ! But Wyatt, you may be able to fill one faster than the other but bigger is better ! I also have a small collection of canning jars and use mine to hold flower seeds, and one full of what i think used to be dried hot peppers ! I have been planning on filling some with some of the odds and endst hat i have found and some lesser grade coins etc. and burying them somewere for someone in the future to find.
