Default Found 2.5 cents this morning...and my oldest coin to date

I went for a short hunt in the yard of a home built in the 1950's a little while ago, and found 2 wheaties......and an 1810 half cent! It's in crapola shape, but the date and denomination are readable.

I washed it with soap and water....not a good idea. It was easier to read before I did that. I'm pretty sure it's virtually worthless.....but it was real fun to dig up. It was only 4 inches deep and registered as a quarter on my 6000Di Pro.

Here's the best picture I could manage. I didn't bother with the 2 wheaties....

I would rather it been silver.....but heck, that was a looong time ago.

In 1810 Pennsylvania had under 800,000 inhabitants, Bethoven had just composed Fur Elise, Napolean had just married Josephine....and James Madison was president. It's also the year of the birth of Frederic Chopin. That's what makes the old ones fun....looking to see what was going on in the world at that moment in time.

Great job, Wyatt! Congrats on that. You don't think the ammonia soak would clean that up?

Great job Wyatt
In all my long years of detecting I have never found one of those.
I bet PAPPY lost that when he was in high school.

The ammonia soak would be far too harsh for a copper coin in this condition. It would render it unrecognizable.

I hope the cows lost some silver in this town. It was settled in 1791....just 2 years prior to the first US coins being minted.
