Default nice 1918 merc today...and 4 silver rosies

After striking out yesterday....my best find was a slag glass marble that I eyeballed on top of the ground....I decided to go hit the park again. I figured I'd probably end up with a bunch of clad again....but I was OK with that, so at 10:30 am I showed up at the park and hopped out of the PT and switched on the detector. It's been raining a lot so I figured maybe I'd find something I'd missed.

Was there for 3 hours and found 21 pennies....probably 5 or 6 are wheaties. As you can see the stuff's still dirty. There are 26 dimes....including the 5 silver ones. Also found 3 nickels and a piece of aluminum chain.

It was fun. The last silver dime I was to dig was the best from the park yet, a 1918 merc with full diagonal bands. It was found near the old concession at a depth of almost 7 inches.

I increased the RF gain and lowered the discrimination to get these ones. The detector was in the "hot" zone today. I went back down and got more goodies....a 45-P war nickel, which is soaking, 6 more clad dimes, 4 regular old nickels, and 17 more pennies including 4 more wheats.

I'll add the war nickel picture after it gets out of the "bath".

Here's the war nickel after it's Tarn-X soak. There are still a couple little spots on it....but good enough for me.

Not if I have anything to say about it....

Last week I'd have sworn that was "it" for the park....but I am learning more about my detector....so if I can get it to punch down a little further...then I'm sure there's more.

I wish they'd use a lawn roller on the whole place. I found an amazing string of coins in the tracks of the tractor tires....where the turf was compressed under the weight of the the old 8N Ford. I was digging coins one after the other. In fact, that's where the war nickel came from. The rest were pennies ranging in date from 1928 to 1961. I probably took a dozen out of that area in a very short time.

You've been having GREAT success! Keep it up. Hmmmmm, I think I'll try in the excavator tracks I saw at the park I go to, now. Thanks for the tip!

I owe the bigger part of my success to having used the same kind of machine since 1987. The more success you have....the more success you will have, and the more experience you gain, the better you'll be able to recognize the machine's "language". That's the key.

With my machine, there's no audible tone after a depth of about 4 inches (until pinpointing in all metal mode). It's all about recognizing the meter reaction. On this machine, if it's a coin or a ring, the meter needle will swing and lock. If you detune the machine using the trigger that you use for pinpointing, you can pass the coil over the target again. If I get a committed reading, and more than once.....it's gettin' dug.

Sometimes I'll check the signal from several different angles to get the best response. Not all coins are lying flat, and coins tipped at an angle will affect the pinpoint location. That's why some targets will appear in the edge of the hole rather than in the center of it.
