Default 1/4 Victoria penny--1840s

I hunted in the woods today not far from where I found the 1865 two cent piece and found this cut English penny. I did a lot of google searches and found that it is a Victoria penny from the 1840s or possibly 1850s.
I guess a penny was worth a lot back then but I did not know that they cut them. The different colors of the pictures are due to different camera settings.
The picture of the front is the true color. HH

Good advice Boobie, thnx. I want to hit those woods again whenever I get the chance. Hate to see winter closing in but spring will be fun too.

It would be interesting to find out what was there in the past. Maybe it wasn't woods at all. Might have been the site of trade of some type. I wonder what they used to cut the pieces back then.
Nice find!

I hope to go back there tomorrow. I would guess that they used a sharp ax and a heavy hammer to cut the coin. It is not a very precise cut and It is a thick coin.

OK I have a question...WHY was the coin cut, what was the purpose of cutting the coin?

Default i remember

my grand father would use a penny to pound into his loose axe handles and pv handles before soaking in water, before use. he was a logger in 1890-1930. in n wi. maybe thats what they were using the 1/4 cents for. george
