Plains Indian Fighters......
.....those guys were tough! What a rough life they lived while in the Army in the 1860's & 1870's on the plains of the American west. A life of sheer monotanous hours filled with an occasional hostile Indian encounter, and weeks of wind howling, bone chilling, dusty, and back braking work.
I got to spend a few hours with a good friend and hunting buddy yesterday, at a "well hunted" outpost (small fort), and stage coach stop on the Colorado plains.
While the finds were meek and few, the history, and vistas were awesome. This "outpost" on private property (with permission), and the solitude it provided, took us both back over 138 years. The sun was warm (73 degrees), the wind was constant, the soil sandy and easy to dig, and all in all it was a wonderful day!
My keepers consisted of an Eagle Button (in superb condition with full back and loop), a Henry 44 caliber shell casing, and a 4 hole iron trousers button, A whole lot of square nails, and broken stove pieces from the areas around the Sibley tent locations.
What a wonderful way to spend a beautiful winter day with a good friend, and the ghosts of times gone by.
