Default Another US Army Hat Badge

I went to some of my favorite haunts this afternoon because the weather was so nice...and a couple new ones in quest of that last 85 cents in silver......but today was not to be the day.

I was swinging the coil by the old roller rink when I got an indication of a target registering "quarter" most of the time....but also reading "half" occassionally....depth indicated was 6 inches. I got down to 6 inches....and no target....but it's still in the hole....and now I'm getting excited because when I dug the 41 walker in the park next door....the indication was almost exactly like this one. I'm thinking "silver half...just a little deeper.....but not this time.

This time it was this US Army Hat Emblem.....fully 8 inches down. and encrusted with verdigris. I soaked it in ammonia and water and was actually able to get the thing apart without breaking it.

I would have thought these were unusual to find....but that's 2 of these for me, though this one appears to be of later vintage.

I also found an Indian head today....worn to about half it's original thickness, and without a readable date. It was only 3 inches deep along the sidewalk leading up to a home built in the 1850s. The sidewalk is much newer and I figure it was pulled up when the walk was poured in the 50s.

Aside from that....I got 1.77 in clad and memorials.

I'm working late to make up for today's afternoon excursion....so I gotta get back to it.

Wyatt

Hi Dave.......This is a 2 piece thing, with a screw back attachment. It's about 1 3/4" in diameter. Here's a picture of the back of it.

Sorry about the silver but still nice find. Hang in there Wyatt I know you can find the last 85 cents. I took my batteries out of my detector yesterday for the winter. Supposed to turn nasty and cold here today. I wish you luck. JoAnne

Thanks Joanne,

Last year I fell short of my goal of 100 silver coins by the end of 2005. I got to 88 or 89.....and ran out of weather.

It's supposed to get ugly here too. It was windy as all git out a little while ago....to the point that we lost power for about 30 seconds....and then it rained like the dickens.

I may not make this year's goal either....but I'll live.

Wyatt

JoAnne don't put it away for the winter just yet. There will be a bunch of nice days left.

Oh Man Boobie and Wyatt - Not sure I am into "extreme detecting". However I took the batteries out but they are laying right next to the detector just in case. I sure hope you are right that there are more detecting days left this year. By the looks of things today I am not too sure. Happy Hunting

Default "extreme Detecting"

We do it every day of the year down here in Southeast Texas. Our weather is very mild compared to most of the weather conditions up North. The worst that we get is a "NORTHERNER"... a very cold wind with lots of rain! The "EXTREME DETECTORIST" here just wrap themselves up and maybe get a poncho and grab their detector and wrap it up also and take off! We won't let any type of weather slow us down....OF COURSE I'VE GOTTEN SICK MORE THAN ONCE FROM ExTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS BUT THAT IS A WHOLE OTHER STORY....
