Default Large Cent...Large disappointment

No silver today either, but the last thing I dug down by the roller rink today was a large cent, which was about 7 inches deep in some fill that had been added in the 60s. It was caked with verdigris to the point that it was nearly as thick as a silver dollar. I'll be lucky to identify what design (obverse or reverse) it once featured. I have about 3/4 of the green crap off of it now....and have found no identifying characteristics. It may not even be an American coin....but it's the same size as the last large cent I dug....which is in equally deplorable condition.

I'll post pics later if I can get some decent ones.

Wyatt

Good luck in cleaning it up.
Will you use Electrolysis to clean it?

Default Cleaning Verdigis Off A Coin???

How would you do this without damaging the coin? Does any one use electrolysis and do you use a commercial unit or do you prefer a homemade unit?

The verdigris......has already damaged the coin. The toothpaste is out of the tube. I am using ammonia to remove the green in an effort to try and identify at least what series it "used to be".....and there's not much left of this coin already. I think it may have been a draped bust variety, but there's still some stuff to remove.

Jury is in......This was a draped bust large cent. I have been able to identify it by the hair ribbon and faint outline of the top of the bust. Still working on the reverse..
