Hello all, found this item by the ghost town yesterday. Large medal, the size of a silver dollar, and is enscribed, "Lay me down and save the Flag" to commemorate Colonel James Mulligan of the 23rd Illinois Volunteers. Born in 1830-1864, On the back of the coin, " To commemorate the valor of our soldiers, and sailors 1861-1865, and 1898-1901. Givin by Illinois state board of agriculture. My name is James Milligan. My great great Grandfather was rumored to be a soldier during that time. I was hoping that you might be able to send me a picture of this medal as it might be one that has a picture of my great-great grandfather who just happened to be a soldier during that time and his name was also James Mulligan but the last name changed sometime late after the war.
