Default Our Big Adventure

Well we started our quest about sometime around 11:30 this morning heading out to an old part of the county thats just starting to be rediscovered. Just south of Manor is a small old community called Glenmore just off Valdosta Hwy here in S. Georgia. Driving this old stretch of Hwy last year on our way to Valdosta we noticed that pine trees had been getting cut down in all areas except one small parcel of about an acre nearest the hwy. Seeing some sort of red brick pilled up in the woods curiosity got the best of me and I just had to stop. 20 feet or so off the hwy the clump of bricks we seen started to take shape 6 foot long by about 3 foot wide as I studied it our son was off deeper in the woods about 7-8 of these old graves long forgoten and none of which we seen had been marked, no clue as to who these people were except that they were slaves as we later found out.
Anyhow as my son and I returned to this community this morning there are 2 dirt roads that was across the hwy from the graveyard taking the first we noticed one old wooden house on the right that still looked inhabited, then right to our left in the woods was another old wooden house that was growed up which looked as if nobody had lived there in many of a year. Rounding the corner we noticed an old church (one of those good ole fashion fatlighter types) and about fifty feet away there was a newer church yet there was not a soul in sight to ask for permission so we turned back to check the second road for a possible site. This time around comming toward the old house we had seen there an older black women was walking her dog, we stopped to ask about the church and the house across from hers. The church she told us was well over 100 years old and the house across from hers belonged to her great aunt I was just about to ask for permission to hunt this when I noticed someone on the porch in a chair with a shotgun, this made me feel uneasy and I thanked her for her time and felt we should ease on back to paved road. About 1/4 mile down the road we noticed the second dirt road and decided to try our luck here. Well it payed off in the woods close to the railroad tracks we seen an old house off in the woods. Parking on the side of the dirt road we trek off to see what this old place wanted to give up. Littered up with old cans and other items that were indeed well past thier prime were strewn about the site which seemed to consist of an old house, a tool shed?, and a spot just next to the house fenced around a tree where pigs? would have been raised. The underbrush in here was thick to say the least and within 30 seconds of being there the detector goes crazy for the ground was full of treasures bottles, toys, ect all over under the damp greound below us. Digging at one spot we found this old axe head behind the house near a briar patch. Wanting to explore this place further we turned off the detector and began exploring the surface of these old quarters. Looking at and old hole we suspected it to possibly be that of an old outhouse it was strewn with trash but its location made it nearly impossible to get to without a machete. after seeing this and listening to train which rumbled by in the woods about 25 yards away I was feeling the humidity take its toll on my body and felt it was time to take a step back out to the dirt road and cool off plus I was itching for some reason and had to find out why.Seven ticks later four on me and 3 on my son I decided to call it a day on this site, however we will be back.

Well I tried to post the photo but it said it was to large

Quite a story there. It was definately an interesting read. I do encourage you to go back again to see what all you can find there. As for the old church and the woman, you should go back there again and ask for permission... tell them you can share in some of the finds... who knows, they may be able to tell you of more sites you haven't found yet.

Great accounting of your day's adventure, BackyardBandit. I'm sure the folks there were peace loving enough, but the shotgun does get one's attention. Perhaps a trip back is in order, but if you're uncomfortable, let it go & seek a new spot. The South is full of potential MD spots, as I noticed on a recent RV trip to Georgia and Florida.

Here in our area of Iowa, if something gets abandoned, it gets plowed under for more cropland. Not that there aren't some sites around, but they're hard to get permission to hunt.
