Cool Newbie Hunter - Strange Find

Hi everyone, how's it going?

I've been a treasure hunter for about 4 hours now. My son got a metal detector for Christmas (a Discovery 1100 - dunno if that means anything to anyone) so we took it out into the backyard this afternoon to mess around with it. I collected coins when I was younger and would've throttled someone to own a metal detector, so truth be told this toy was more for me than it was for my son.

The detector has three 'find' hits - one for IRON (makes a razzing noise so I assume that's undesirable), one labeled MID-RANGE (not sure what that encompasses), and one called SILVER/COPPER. After digging up the obligatory rusty nails, we decided to only dig on the SILVER/COPPER hits.

Right dead smack in the middle of my yard, about six inches down, we found the following object. I cleaned it up with baking soda and a toothbrush (read that somewhere in your forum) and thought it was pretty cool looking. Maybe a brooch or a pin? I have no clue what it's made of, but I guess it looks copper(?) Anyway, here's a couple of photos of it, front and back (big photos):

Looks like it has little crowns on it or something. Anyone got any ideas?

At any rate, I've been reading these forums for the last hour and I really love the things you've all found. You've given me many ideas on where to hunt and made me want to buy a nicer, better detector for myself.

So hello, and I look forward to browsing the rest of the forum.

-Danny

Okay, you're right - that photo is ridiculous.

Sized it down to approx 1000x1000.

Ah yes, scale would be nice right? The piece is about 2 inches in diameter. Below is a photo of it next to a standing liberty quarter that we also "found" today also (had to jumpstart the kids' interests in metal detecting in case the 3 pennies and 1 wheat cent we legitimately found along weren't that exciting).

I live in Ronkonkoma, which is in central Long Island, New York. Hopefully there are some cool places on Long Island on which to find stuff, but the sheer number of people that live here probably means most of the island has been picked over.

And Joanne, thanks. It's always cool to be welcomed into a new hobby by people who love doing it. I already know I'll be hooked. But man, I've got wayyyyy too many hobbies...

Thanks Joanne!

Dunno why this didn't post last night, so I'll re-post the following pic so you can see the object to scale. It's about 2'' long. I live in Ronkonkoma, NY which is located in Central Long Island.

Thanks all,
-Danny

P.S. - What kind of shovel is everyone using to dig plugs (hehe... just learned that term)? I'm brute-forcing it with a spade-shovel for now, still gotta buy a garden trowel. All this stuff is new.

Thanks Boobie, those look like some good diggers.

Mr.Silver, I can't take credit for the standing liberty quarter. It was among my old coin collection that I sorta seeded the backyard with just to get the kids excited about "finding" something.

The best thing I've found so far is a 1954 wheat cent.
