I am just getting into things and am starting to watch my change. All I have found so far is a 1943d steel penny. Basically worth....well, a penny but it was still cool to find.

Looking through change brings back some memories. When I was a youngster (1950's) My dad would go to the bank and get rolls of penneys and we would go through them looking for old coins. I remember one he found was a 1909 S VDB along with many other old dates. He later became a dealer for Whites and Fisher and continued his desire to find old coins by digging them with a metal detector. He died in 1996 at the age of 80 and had accumulated, in his life time a foot locker of old coins. My sister now has the coins.

hello, well to tell a proof on any nickel made after 1970-S that has an S (san franciso) mint mark is a proof. all newer coinage that has a S mint mark is a proof. proof dime and quarters started in 1968-S. a proof coin almost look mirored
for silver dime, quaters the last year for silver was 1964. nickels were only 40% silver durnig WWII which were the years 1942-1945. all mint marks are above monticello even P mint mark. the only time P (phil. mint mark) was put on the nickels at that time. if it doesnt have a P its counterfeit.

well hope this help if you have any more question let me know. chris

Talking 1879 Wheat penney

Many years ago I got a 1879 Indian head wheat penny in change from a 7-11. Got a lot of wheaties, a few buffalo nickels and ten or so silver half dollars, and a few silver quarters I collected from change as teen. Haven’t looked at those in years. Guess I should get them out and see what they sound like, eh?

I get a few wheaties now and again in change...but something I saw on A&E has got me thinking...the story was about the man named Binion who owned the Horseshoe Casino - and how he saved all the silver that flowed through the casino (I think the name is correct) ...to a tune of millions of dollars that he stashed in a specially built underground cache...he was eventually murdered by his wife and her lover for the silver which had to be removed from the ground with a small crane and loaded onto a tractor-trailer...

Anyhow - since Peg and I love to gamble now and then - I'm thinking of buying 2 or 3 hundred dollars of quarters at a time (since they no longer use real silver dollars) and sift through them before turning them back in for foldiing green...bound to be a few silver ones in there...I'll let you know how it works in a few weeks after my next Vegas trip!

I recently got a 1962 Rosie and the darned thing looked like it came straight from the mint. Not a scratch and no sign of tarnishing.Almost looks like someone pulled it out of a collection.

Just an FYI, those machines where you dump your change, check the the return slot on them. They for some reason will kick out silver. I found a 1964 Rosie in the return, and could of sworn in the directions it said something about 1964 and prior.

Well my step grandfather had a great collection. My grandmother let a young man move in and help her with chores while she lived in Corbin, KY and his son found the collection and well I don't think I have to tell you what happened next but I will. That little stupid kid took the money and spent it. The collection included silver dollar bills and coins dated back to the 1700s. Let me tell you if would have know then what I know today I would have taken some of those coins. I used to sit and look at them all the time. Maybe onday when I look in my change I may find some that that little booger took.

I have found 3 silver quarters this past summer in change and a couple of dimes.

Something I do in the winter (when it is too cold to hunt) is go to the bank and buy $100 worth of half dollars and search them for silver. When I first started doing this I found about 2 in every batch. Now I find about 1 every other batch. I think I have hunted out my area.
