Question Anybody know what this is? It's not metal.

Hey all,
I was out detecting a few days ago. I found nothing but junk but while I was sifting through some dirt, out popped this thing. It is a small round ball, made of some kind of stone. (brick, ceramic, clay, pottery????)
I have no idea what it is. The nickel is only in the picture to give you an idea as to the size of the thing.
Any ideas?

Default It looks.....

......to me like an early marble. I have found several of them at old 19th century army camps, and in CW sites, as well as at some Indian campgrounds.

NICE FIND!

Sometimes they still have some "dye" on them, decorated with colored lines and designs. Is there any color on that one?

No coloring that I can see. The whole thing is kind of a tan color with specks of black in it, like it was made from some sort of mixture or clay, rolled into a ball and then baked or something.

BBQCOOK... What is a *** stone???

The way my wife bakes it looks like it could be a loaf of her bread.
Once when we were first married and out of the country she decided to try her hand at baking. Which she had never done before. She was so proud of it.She took it out of the oven and set it on the table.
Well to make it a short story.
We had ceramic flooring and the bread fell off the table and hit the floor sounding like a piece of concrete & broke in half.
I
so as you can guess that was the end of her baking for quite a few years.

A clay marble, huh? I never heard of such a thing, but if that's what it is... I am pretty excited to have found it. I will definitely be hitting that site again. Thanks to everyone for all your input.

Default Clay Marbles

The game of marbles goes back at least hundreds of years. And during the Colonial Years I'm sure that these clay marbles were more plentiful than the glass ones. Namely because of price and they could be homemade!! See if you can dig an exploratory trench in the area that this marble was found and use a sifter. You may find other marbles, pipestems, bottles, beads, etc. .......HH.........JOE
