Default diggin through change

Too cold and wet to get out today so decided to clean out the truck. Took all the change I found in the truck and took it in the house where it is warmer and looked through it. Found five silver nickles and a 1956 wheatie! I was suprised to say the least and I will take what I can get in this weather LOL

Default silver

hey didijim, the nickles aren't very old they were just old enough to be silver. two 1961 two 1962 and one 1963. The wheat penny was a 1956. That sounds like a great fishin trip with the 16 pound trout! I fished on a commercial boat with my dad when I was 16 yrs old out of newport, I really like that area you are in. Happy hunting! Hey I remember an abandoned drive in movie just south of the bridge at newport on the ocean side of the highway, have you had a chance to hunt it?

Good idea, and I'm glad you had fun, but I'm pretty sure those aren't silver nickels...

If I remember correctly from my coin collecting days, silver nickels were issued during WWII (1939-1945?) and have giant-sized mintmarks over Monticello.

Default Wartime (silver) nickels

Your getting closer, on October 8, 1942 the alloy was changed to 56% copper, 9% maganesez and 35% silver to save nickel for war use. These were minted from 1942 thru 1945 and are easily identified by a large mint mark above the Monticello on the coins reverse. The 'P' (Philliadelphia) mint mark was used for the first time, to indicate alloy change.

Fishin' fool... I think the year you're lookin' for is 1964 (not 1963). Any quarters or dimes or half dollars you find that are 1964 or earlier... those are silver. 90% silver, I believe. Dollars too, of course.
