Default 1st Day Out Recap(Pic)!

Well today was my first official day out with the Taquero,I was by myself most of the day and then James and I hunted for an hour this evening.

I started at a little park near a small bayou and just stayed in the pine wooded part and the dry sand that borders it,not really somewhere I planned to go just close to the house.I found a penny or 2 ,5-6 poptops,a lead jighead, random aluminum and 2 beer cans that were over a foot deep...There was a 2x6 laying on this trail and and being it my first day ever with a MD in my hands I decided to scan it to see if there was nails in it (dont ask me,lol),anyways it marked as something so I flipped it over and the target was a 95' nickel about 4 inches deep below the board in the ground.I also stopped at another park in the area, all I found there was a penny in really bad shape, poptops, and a deep mountain dew can.

After that I moved to this early 1900s house my father works at,I found mainly all scrap metal and had a really hard time finding some targets and had to trouble shoot and second guess myself doing mini excavations..I have several questions ,but plan to make another post on that...Anyways while I was alone didnt find much but had fun, learned a few things and it went about as I expected in the areas I hunted.

So this afternoon after James(friend)got off work we went and checked out one of the spots weve been wanting to hunt..This is a little house another friend owns and is selling so we we want to hunt it while we can,the area has alot of history and the house was built in the early 1800's but the area is rich before that also.We only had about an hour of light but couldnt even ground balance the machine due to all the metal in the area,I found several pieces of heavy metal and at this point my head was spinning trying to figure out exactly where all the signals were coming from(will explain in other thread)...Anyways it was fun hunt there was alot of old plate pieces, very old broken bottles and just lots of historic debris.I only had one excavation at this place and found just about everything I looked for(I think)...Anyways James found a cool little piece that we can at least say is pretty cool ,for us anyways, and we plan to do a full day hunt there this weekend.

The piece James found we are pretty sure is the handle of a butterknife or other utensil,it has "USN"(United States Navy) on it,it weighs about 2.5 oz.on the end that is hollow there is about an inch in depth then solid..Looks like someone used it as a hammer. Its pretty heavy so we figured it wasnt silver but we dont know much ,just mainly liked it as we are a US Navy town since 1825,though it may not be to old but probably older than us.

you are doing great, keep hunting and you will learn the machine and all of it will come together. Good luck with the old house, it sounds like you may find many good items.

We went back there yesterday for another hour or so probably dug 30 holes...Found mostly rusted away metals, tried to clear a 2 x 2 area to GB but its just not happening in this area of town.We are going to leave the place alone until we figure out the machines a little better as even on sens at 1,and discrim at max its still constant targets.Once we dig around 8 inches we hit a layer of charred wood and are finding some melted glass,it is an area with alot of fighting between the Spanish and Brits, with hundreds of Creek and Choctaw Indians on both sides in 1781 Battle of Pcola. It also 350 years of other debris. We did find some thick metal plates also of various sizes. So the total at this point for that house is:

1. Broken USN utensil
2. Rifle Bullet,unfired maybe 30.06
3. Belt Buckle reads on back "FrenchSilverPlate" - "Giant Grip Base Metal" - "P.A.T 12-13-21" oldest MD find to date.

We have other areas to check in this part of town also.

The rest of the week was mainly just hitting various random spots "just to see" alot of them are red clay bluffs along the bays, havent really hit a an area weve researched yet.

The pic has a few items,of what I kept the cell phone w/holder I found visually, its a nextel so I got home put my battery in and it fired right up...The small yellow object I found underneath a pile of feathers,it is a bird band of a racing pigeon,I researched it found the owner of the bird who is about an hour away in Robertsdale,AL..told him "That racing pigeon wasnt as fast as the coopers hawk or merlin who ate his a..." lol.

Anyways in any of my topics or pics if you see something I miss ID please inform me...on those same bluffs I also found what I think is a "wadcutter" bullet from a .38 or .357 not sure and a .22 shell, now these are no big finds but noone has been shooting guns in these areas for a long time so they are probably pre-60s.

The rocks I found at another clay bluff along Alabama, not sure what they are but they are all over the area I was in and very annoying as they read at sens 1,discrim max...I found the little black bullet in these bluffs but "ran away" quickcly because of the metal sandstone rocks.

Through the week we also found clad,100 pounds of RR spikes, plates etc..cans,poptops also I just didnt list it...Also at the house James found a small ball I think is some sort of shot as its blunted like it connected to something, about the size of "000" buck.

Thanks Pappy I was looking through "google patents" last night,I think the numbers are the date it was PAT,but not sure...Couldnt find the date I have listed but also cant 100% ID the "1" in 21,but there was alot of belt buckles similar to this pne I found(at google patents) made in the early 20's...but the thing works good as new.
